My dog has stomach pain, won't eat, and strains. Could it be ulcers?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old | 186 lbs

Abdominal pain, straining to poop, loss of appetite. Xrays show no blockage, should hear back from bloodwork tomorrow. Vet believes its stomach ulcers...thoughts? Not yelping just wants his tummy rubbed, no vomiting except when he eats grass. No diarrhea. Drinking normal. Symptoms seem worse at night. Doc put on tramadoil for abdominal pain, a stool softener, pepcid 40mg and sucralfate. Hard to give tramadoil bc he wont eat and heard its bad for him to take without food.

He could have stomach ulcers but he could also have pancreatitis, liver/kidney disease, endocrine diseases, etc. If the blood-work comes back normal than he could have an abdominal ultrasound to look for abnormalities. You could feed him some boiled chicken and white rice and see if you can get him to eat. Hope he feels better soon!
