My cat ripped stitches, wound bleeding. Can it wait? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 13 lbs

My cat was hit by a car in the middle of Dec. and was treated by the vets (who said he was very lucky). He had a lot of stitches on his legs, all of which have now gone, however, he also had some put back on. 5 minutes ago, he ripped dead bits off (about 10cm long) & has done it so suddenly that it is raw & blood is now running down his leg. We already have a vet check up in the morning - is he okay to wait until then or not? and if so, what should we do about the blood & wound? Cover it, or?

My goodness! So sorry to hear that TIgger has had all these issues. I do think it can wait til your vet visit in the morning but if the wound is bleeding I would recommend you try to cover it. Use a non-stick pad over the bleeding area and then LIGHTLY roll some gauze over that pad and then tape it with medical tape. DO NOT USE DUCT TAPE and please, please make sure you don't make the bandage too tight! Do not place neosporin or any other ointments on the wound. One other option is to cover the wound with a non-stick pad and then, if possible, cover the leg with a baby sock and tape the top of the sock to his leg (DO NOT USE A RUBBER BAND)! Be advised that many cats don't like things on them so he may rip the bandage/sock off. If he does that then you may need to take him to the vet sooner. If you have a "cone" for him then I would definitely advise you put that on him until the visit with the vet and, of course, keep him indoors so you can monitor him! I hope this helps. I wish you all the best!

Wow, poor Tigger has had it rough lately! I would apply gently pressure to try to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding isn't excessive and you can get it to stop, then he can wait until morning to see the vet. Once the bleeding stops, wash the area with warm water and antiseptic soap. If you have an Ecollar, I would put that on Tigger to keep him from getting at the area more. If the bleeding is excessive, or you can't get it to stop, then I would have TIgger seen by a vet right away.
