Dog on prednisone for herniated disks has diarrhea. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 8 years old | 4 lbs

My Pomeranian has herniated disks in her back, 4 days ago she was started on prednisone. For 3 days now she has had worsening diarrhea. I'm not sure if it could be due to the medication or if it's a sign of worsening herniations. She feels much better on the medication and I am keeping her as immobile as possible as instructed

It is possible this is due to the prednisone. I would recommend starting her on some gastro protectants such as sucralfate and famotidine as well as a probiotic. We are not allowed to give dosages online so you will need to call your veterinarian. I hope she feels better!
