My dog strains to poop with mucus and little output. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Taking my dog to poop outside, she'll do fine, but then she'll continue to release little to no poop for a while longer. When she starts to strain, the poop is a bit more grainy. I noticed slight mucus on the start of the initial poop. She remains active and continues to eat. Last week, I finished giving her Amoxcillon (6 days, 2/day), she had some discharge from her vulva after being in heat. Vet time? Keep an eye out? Home treatment? Thank you for your help!

Withhold food for 12 hours then offer her boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if she is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put her back gradually on her normal food. If the problem does not resolve, take her to the vet to get treatment.
