My dog has chronic bloody diarrhea. What food should I feed her?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 6 years and 3 months old

What type of food is good for a dog that has runny stools sometimes with blood. My Vet has her on a low dose antibiotic which works most of the time but she still gets runny stools.

Rule out intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. If the soft stool is chronic, consider endoscopy to evaluate the gut and to get some biopsies. This may diagnose IBD or other inflammatory process. Feed a good quality diet that is low in fat. Increased fiber may help. Discuss a fiber supplement as well as probiotic use with your vet. You can also add 1 teaspoon per 10lbs body weight of plain canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) to the diet once or twice daily. Food allergies/sensitivities should also be ruled out.

Poor baby! I would try to stick with just chicken as this is a little gentler on her stomach than beef. Beef is higher in fat and can cause pancreatitis. I would also make sure to add fiber (canned pumpkin or canned green beans) and a probiotic to the diet to help keep her regular. I like propectalin paste or purina fortiflora powder as probiotics for dogs. You can check out balanceit.com to help you create as completely balanced diet since she doesn't like regular dog food. If you haven't already, I would have your vet check her for any parasites as this could as cause issues with her bowel movements. Finally, if it continues, I would have your vet take a look at her as there could be other things going on. I hope this helps!
