Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 80 lbs

My dog was first bred on 11/21 and bred again on 11/23 breathing is kind of labored however she is still active. She did not eat much yesterday and I do not think she ate today, should I be expecting puppies soon?

The average gestation length for a dog is 58-68 days, so Charlotte should be going into labor any day now. I would start taking her temperature rectally twice a day. A dog's normal temperature is between 101-102.5F. Once it drops below 100F, she should give birth to puppies within 24 hours.

Congratulations by the way. Typically a pet is due for labor within 24 hrs of having a low rectal temperature reading. It has to be a rectal reading in order to be accurate. However, some pets don't always fit the book and end up being a few days later. The gestation period is between 58-72 days, so she is well within that window now and I would expect her to start the 2nd stage of labor soon where she is actively having contractions and pushing puppies. Here is a website link with information on pregnant dogs and it also talks about the 1st and 2nd stages of labor and other things to watch out for. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951546 I hope that Chapita has healthy beautiful puppies soon! Best wishes and take care.
