What causes a dog's dry cough when resting but no other symptoms?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 6 years and 7 months old | 12 lbs

Simba has had a dry cough for about 3 days now, when he is at home resting. Otherwise, he eats his food, runs around outside, plays as usual, and has a wet nose. In case there is a connection, before he started coughing, he went out for his evening walk at night in the garden in Panama where we live, when he suddenly yelped and came back limping for a while, licking his paw. Back home, we couldn't see anything wrong with his paw and the limp had gone. But then, the cough at rest started....

Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.
