Is it okay to crate my dog for 9 hours a day while I'm at work?

Our dogs destroy everything if left out so we crate them when gone and they dont mind. Now our work schedules will leave them alone 9 hrs a day. We moved their crates to the basement so they can play together and be free but they sit at the bottom of the stairs all day and whine. Would it be better to just put them in their crates locked up upstairs again or keep trying the basement thing? I dont like them caged that long and can only come home for 30 minutes. Outdoors unattended isnt an option.

It's fine to keep them in their crates during the day. It gives them a safe space of their own, and if they are comfortable with it, I would keep doing it. Coming home for 30 minutes is more than enough time to let them out to potty, play for a bit, and then go back into the kennels until you are done with work.
