Why is my dog vomiting, has diarrhea, and accidents but seems fine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 15 lbs

Our poodle/schnauzer mix suddenly has diarrhea, vomiting, is leaving light/watery red spots on the floor (unclear if it's blood), and peed in the house tonight and last night he pooped (solid) in his kennel. We haven't had housebreaking or incontinence issues with him. He is acting normal but I'm not sure what is causing this. He is older but is fairly healthy. We do have a toddler who throws food down to our dogs occasionally but I don't think he has eaten anything that would make him so ill.

It could be that your toddler threw some food to Ross that has made him ill, or he could be suffering from a GI illness. I am concerned that you found some watery red spots on the floor, but given that he is acting normally and you aren't clear if it is blood, I will give you a home remedy to see that helps him before having to take him into the vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, you see blood in his vomit or diarrhea, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
