My cat swats when I pet her and her tail swishes. Is she mad?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My cat is healthy, likes her food, litter, etc and does all the things happy cats do but her tail is always swishing back and forth! She comes over and rubs her head on you like she wants to get pet, but when you pet her she swats, but doesn't leave-as though she wants to pet you. I've had her most of her life, before that my sister found her as a kitten and had her with her dogs that she got along with well. She also gets along with my other cat, so what's she so mad about all the time?!

This is fairly common cat behavior. Many cats become overstimulated by petting. Follow her lead and pet only until she pins her ears back or swishes her tail. You may want to find other ways to spend time with her like playing with a toy together. She isn't necessarily mad all the time - she may just not like cuddling.
