Why is my dog vomiting yellow foam, trembling, and distressed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | unneutered | 11 years and 6 months old

My dog has a 2 inch wound on his tail, it appeared to be a scratch. He is 11 years old, and he seemed to be distressed for the past 2 or 3 days, but I thought that was because of the neighbor's kids throwing fireworks. Now he is vomiting yellow foam-like stuff, trembling, and appears to be even more distressed. I live in a remote area, no chance to contact a vet until the day after tomorrow. Please help :(

Poor Max! This vomiting is likely unrelated to his wound, and could be caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or pancreatitis. You can try a home remedy now to see if that helps Max, but I would try to find a vet a close as possible to you now in case you have to rush him in. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
