My cat stopped eating and is very lethargic. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 9 months and 11 days old

Cat seemed fine until yesterday, but has stopped eating today. He has just slept in bed all day. Not interested in food at all, which is very unlike him. He usually loves food. It is very cold, cloudy here; no sunshine since yesterday. What could be wrong with him? What can I do to help? (Also, I've had the flu since last week, but hopefully that isn't contagious?)

Lethargy and loss of appetite are very vague symptoms but can be a sign that something isn't right. it's possible that illness, digestive upset, pain, parasites or other issues could be the cause. if it happens for more than a day, or worsens, it is best to seek veterinary care ASAP for Lucky to find the underlying cause. While cats can get the 'flu" the type humans get is usually not the same type cats get, and it is rare to have them passed from human to cat (however not impossible, as a virus can always mutate). Seeking veterinary care for Lucky if his symptoms continue is the best course of action.
