New cat stress? My cat is vomiting and not eating. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 7 years and 6 months old | 10 lbs

So I got a new cat Buddy but my other cat Tuna doesnt really like other cats. Since we got him she has been throwing up and eating less, although she is drinking water normally. She has been doing this for about a week and Im really worried, should I take her to the vet or will it go away?

It sounds like Tuna might be having anxiety about the new cat. The vomiting might be from stress and anxiety, but we have to ask is it only behavior, or is there a medical reason. A trip to your veterinarian for an exam and possible lab work would help to make sure there are no other concerns. If it is determined to be a behavior problem, I would start with a pheromone such as Feliway that can help with anxiety. It is available as a plug-in room diffuser for large areas, and as a spray for small areas like a mat or bed. https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=8906 https://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=37241 Another product I like is Composure, which is available as a little treat. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/vetri-science-composure-feline-bite-sized-chews If these do not help, you might consider discussing prescription medication for anxiety with your veterinarian. Lastly, here is a link to an article about the best way to introduce a new cat to the home. You might need to back up a bit and try this. https://www.petcoach.co/article/5-steps-to-introducing-your-cat-to-a-new-feline/ Thanks for using PetCoach.
