My dog's eye is red after a toy hit it. Will it heal on its own?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 17 lbs

Good evening. I was playing fetch with my dog when the toy hit his eye after flying in the air. It now looks like maybe a blood vessel has broken as it is red in the spot you can see in the photo. Is this something that will heal on its own? I am hoping to avoid bringing him into the vet if it isn't necessary. Thank you! (I have also attached a photo of the toy that hit his eye, it is made of a burlap type material)

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It looks like Gary has a small subconjunctival hemorrhage (basically a small ruptured blood vessel). This should resolve on its own, but I recommend keeping an eye on the area to make sure that it does not get any bigger or cause Gary any discomfort. If you notice that Gary is pawing at the eye, or is having discharge or squinting, he should be seen by a vet right away. I hope all is well and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!
