My cat is lethargic and not eating since new kitten. Is it serious?

Hi there. I just got a new kitten and my 2yr old cat has been very lethargic and has not been eating her food at all since the kitten has come home. What should I do? Is this a big concern

Congrats on your new kitten, but I'm sorry Eloise isn't doing well. Yes, I would be very concerned that she isn't eating. When cats do not eat going on 72 hours, they develop a fatty liver. A fatty liver is fatal without treatment, so anorexia in cats is considered serious. While bringing home a new cat is stressful for the existing cat, it typically does not cause severe lethargy and anorexia. I would be concerned that Eloise is sick, and I would take her into a vet today for a health check. I hope this helps!

It sounds like poor Olive is sick. Anorexia and lethargy can be signs of many illnesses such as a systemic illness, infection, inflammation, or injury. It's actually quite serious when a cat isn't eating, and I would take her into the vet as soon as possible. The vet can diagnose the cause of her symptoms, and can treat her for it. Please take her into a vet. Best of luck.

No this isn't normal and Scribble has to see a vet immediately. It's extremely serious she isn't eating, as when a cat doesn't eat for longer than 72 hours, they develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. While the stress of having a new kitten can cause a cat not to eat, it shouldn't last this long. I'm concerned there is something more serious going on with her, such as kidney disease, liver disease, dental problems. or even cancer. She needs veterinary care now, please take her into a vet right away.

The stress of the new kitten could have started his symptoms, but most of the time a cat will adjust to new circumstances in the amount of time you have described. If it is not stress, he may have contracted an illness from the kitten. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian again or you can consider seeking a second opinion. Bloodwork would be warranted at this point. Cats can actually develop severe liver disease if they go extended periods without eating. I hope this information helps!

It's actually extremely serious when a cat won't eat, as if they go long enough without eating, they will develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. Your cat sounds very sick, you cannot treat this at home. You need to take her into a vet now.

This is a medical emergency, and Blacky has to see a vet now. If a kitten goes longer than 72 hours without eating, they will develop a fatty liver, which is fatal without treatment. Leaving her like this is cruel, and you need to find a way to afford a vet. Borrow money from family and friends. See if your vet accepts payment plans. You cannot treat this at home, please take her into a vet right away.

Poor Katrina! Unfortunately, these are very vague symptoms that could be caused by almost any kind of illness, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine her and run some tests. She may have a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, some type of infectious disease like FIP (feline infectious peritonitis), or even cancer. Not eating for more than 24 hours in cats always warrants a vet visit, because they can develop a serious liver problem called hepatic lipidosis when they don't eat, in addition to whatever illness is causing the inappetance in the first place. So, I would definitely recommend taking Katrina to the vet today for an exam. He/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

It sounds like Akira may be sick, and it is very serious when a cat won't eat. If they go long enough without eating (around 72 hours), they will develop a fatty liver. A fatty liver is fatal without treatment, so you want to avoid this. Have her seen by a vet first thing in the morning.

Cats tend to deteriorate quickly, so I would recommend a veterinary visit. Starting with blood work which will include a cell count, an evaluation of organ function and a thyroid evaluation should help your veterinarian to find what the source is. Cats can develop Hepatic Lipidosis or a fatty liver after a few days of not eating, and this can be difficult to reverse. I would bring him in today if possible.

I would bring her in right away for an exam. None of this is normal although stress can have a huge impact on kittens. These young guys can't go very long without food and I would surmise that is why she is so weak and lethargic.

This is a quite generic but concerning sign. Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example) like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours.
