How to tell if my cat is a purebred Maine Coon or another breed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 2 years and 6 months old | 15 lbs

What breed of cat or mix of cat breeds? We were told it was a possibility of a purebred Maine coon but wasn’t sure

Tigger is a very handsome boy! Based on his appearance and his weight of 9 pounds, I would say that he is not a purebred Maine Coon. Maine Coons are quite large cats and have a shaggy coat. Tigger looks like he has a short coat, which is not characteristic of a Maine Coon. Based on the pictures you have provided, he looks like a domestic shorthair to me.
