My dog is struggling to sit or jump. Is she having back pain?

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Honey! She is very cute! Honey sounds very painful. The most common reason for random crying out in pain and trouble sitting is neck or back pain. The dog's also stop jumping up and have trouble doing steps. The most common cause is a muscle strain or sprain or a mineralized disk. I treat neck and back pain with muscle relaxants, pain medications and anti-inflammatories. I recommend having Honey seen by a Vet. They can help figure out where she is painful and prescribe the correct medications. Please do not start human medications as they can interfere with the medications your Vet will want to prescribe. This can be caused by arthritis - pretty much any joint can be affected as well as the spine. Your vet can perform a thorough orthopedic exam and x-rays to isolate the signs to a particular part of the body. Certain conditions such as Lyme disease and autoimmune disease also cause generalized joint pain and can be ruled out with bloodwork. To me this sounds like Echo is likely in some degree of pain. A change in activity is often a sign of pain. Most dogs don't actively whine or complain when they are uncomfortable or painful. If back or neck pain is present a dog won't always limp. Please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need to have medication prescribed by a veterinarian. Until you can get to your veterinarian I'd suggest making sure Echo stays rested - don't allow running, jumping, or stair use. It sounds like your dog has a problem with her back as that is a common sign of back pain. Dogs are usually reluctant to jump because it causes pain. Your vet can check her for back pain and then prescribe medications to help. She may need an anti-inflammatory, muscle relaxer, and/or pain medications to help. Also, it would be a good idea to restrict her activity for a few weeks, no running, jumping, etc. Hope she feels better soon!

It could be that Ellie has injured her back or her hips, leading her to be in pain and not jump much. She could also have a slipped disc in her back causing her pain. It's good that her gums are pink, but it is concerning that she is in pain. I would rest her over the weekend. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. If she still appears painful after this time, then I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from with a lameness exam and x-rays, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. She may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! This is possibly neck or back pain or pain of a different source. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Pari evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Pari feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. There are many possible causes of what you are describing and because of that, I would recommend having her examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend starting with an examination and then having her blood tested to see if there are any concerning changes on her blood test. Poor Chloe! It sounds like she may be painful somewhere. I often see dogs with back or neck pain that act this way, because doing stairs or jumping is painful for them. It's also possible that she may have injured herself somehow, or has some type of orthopedic problem that makes these activities uncomfortable. I would recommend taking her to the vet for an exam. He/she may be able to determine what the problem is by palpating her neck, back, and legs, and may also recommend x-rays or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem.

Hello, Maggie looks like she is a real cutie. Not wanting to jump is a very clear indication of either back or abdominal pain. Since her BMs are normal, I would guess her back is bothering her a bit. Rest & antiinflammatories are the best cure for this type of thing. You can apply a little warmth to her back for about 10 minutes 2-3 times a day but speak with your veterinarian about some pain medication. She is, after all, getting to be a senior citizen. Ammu definitely sounds like she might be in pain on some part of her body. While you might not be able to appreciate any pain on palpation of her legs and hips at home, a more well-trained set of hands might be able to isolate a small area that could be injured. Even if you have not seen a traumatic event occur, it is still quite possible that a young Beagle could have somehow caused herself an injury while romping around. Other causes of difficultly rising or getting around could be a systemic infection, neurologic problem, or inflammatory condition. Any of these would require a diagnostic work up by a veterinarian to determine what therapies should be instituted.
