Why is my cat peeing outside the litter box and pooping blood?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

I took in a stray cat and on February 13th of this year I brought him to a low cost clinic where he was neutered and vaccinated. Now he is peeing and pooping in random spots in my house (he’s been inside well over a month and this is the first time it’s happened) and there is also bright red blood with mucus that I find on the floor after he poops. Spots of blood are about the size of a quarter and I’ve found 3 so far. Could it be a complication from the neuter? Clinic hasn’t returned calls

It is unlikely related to neuter surgery since it has been over a week since the procedure. The going to the bathroom out of the litter box can be a sign of stress or a medical problem. The blood is concerning and may be related to the diet or an infection. You do need to have a vet examine him and check a stool sample for parasite and an infection. They can prescribe medication if needed. The longer this goes on, the harder it is to make them go back to the litter box You may also look into changing the diet to sensitive stomach formula to help and adding a probiotic that can be purchased at a pet store to help until you can get him rechecked.
