My cat died after diarrhea, weight loss, and hiding. What caused it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female | spayed

Our cat died Saturday but our neighbor found him in his garden yesterday. He had increasing blood and mucus in stool last year summer then seemed fine. Then he started having diorheas for the last month. Increasing in severity and stated losing weight. He started sleeping for most of the day in places he never went before like he was hiding away. I was trying to save the money for the vet ..... he was only 8. I’m heartbroken and feel I let him down . He was so loved

First off, I'm sorry for the loss of Sox! How horrible for you and please accept my condolences for your loss. It sounds like he was sick for a while given the symptoms you have described, and he could have been suffering from a systemic illness, liver failure, kidney failure, or even cancer leading to his death. Unfortunately I cannot say for certain, but it is very sad that he passed away. I'm sure he knew he was loved by you, and you were doing the best you could for him. Again, please accept my condolences for your loss :-(
