Why is my dog hunched and in pain when sitting or changing position?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Male | neutered | 9 years and 8 months old | 28 lbs

My dog is having pain when he tries to sit up or move positions. He sits and stands hunched over but can walk fine and is fine when laying down. He is eating and drinking well but seems in pain. He is a cocker spaniel with no previous serious ailments.

Poor Reggie! I'm wondering if he has a problem with his back or hips if he is sitting and standing hunched over. He could also have pain in his stomach. He should see a vet for this first thing in the morning. Until then, rest him. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can prescribe pain medications as needed, as well as diagnosing where the pain is coming from and how to treat it. I would rush him into an ER vet if you notice him in extreme pain (whining, pacing), he stops eating, he tries to vomit without anything coming up, or his stomach area appears bloated. Good luck, I hope this helps!
