My puppy's spay incision is opening and oozing. Should I go to ER?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 months and 24 days old | 35 lbs

My 5 month old puppy was spayed on Wednesday and I picked her up from the shelter on Friday. The incision was okay for the last couple days but a few minutes ago I checked and it was more of a scabby knot. Just now (after she was laying on a dry floor just chewing a toy kinda dozing off) I looked again and it’s opening more and now oozing. Do I go to an emergency vet or wait for a regular clinic to open? The pics are bad cause she wiggles a lot but you can see the sheen of ooze...

It's a little difficult to tell, but it looks as if the incision is starting to open a little. If that is the case, then I would recommend having her examined today. It is better to be safe than sorry with surgical incisions. The oozing does not concern me as much as the fact that the incision is starting to open and the fact that is has opened more during the day today. I would also make sure that she wearing an e-collar and not able to lick at the area because that will get it infected. Good luck! I hope that was helpful.
