My cat keeps throwing up food and hairballs. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years and 7 months old | 6 lbs

Cinny will vomit about once/week 1 or 2 times. Usually on mat by door.Half the time 1 pile has a hairball in it, rest is partially or undigested food which will get re-eaten if left. Otherwise they seem fine. No weight loss, diarrhea or meds. Just saw Houdini bring up just food. So now not sure who does it overnight. I'm disabled so they don't get brushed (shorthair). And it's hard to keep up with the cat hair. No carpet.Should I switch food or see Vet? Or could it be just because of hairballs?

Houdini and Cindy are so cute! Vomiting in cats can be a sign of a number of issues including food sensitivities, kidney disease, toxin exposure, or inflammatory bowel disease. It's always a good idea to have a cat examined by a veterinarian for vomiting so that blood work or other testing can be done to rule out more serious issues. They may need supportive medication like Cerenia to help stop the vomiting. If Cinny and Houdini check out okay at the veterinarian then they may need a diet change. Some diets like Royal Canin Sensitive Stomach may be helpful. Or it is a possible a prescription diet like Hill's i/d may be beneficial. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and I hope Cinny and Houdini feel better soon!
