Why is my cat lethargic, losing weight, and shedding more?

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Lil Bub is very handsome! I recommend starting with an exam with your Vet. I would test (or test again) for Feline leukemia and FIV. Sadly we have to consider FIP (feline infectious peritonitis) as a reason for a poor appetite and weight loss in a young pure bred cat. FIP has no cure and is devastating. Also there is no good test for it. I would bring a stool sample to check for intestinal parasites and would likely deworm him anyway even if the test is negative. I would recommend full blood work. If the above is normal then I would do an belly ultrasound next to look for IBD. If his intestines are thick I would send out a B12, foalte, TLI, PLI to check for maldigestion/malabsorption. IBD is treated with a hypoallergenic diet and steroids. I hope this helps and I wish you and Lil Bub the best!

Poor Bubba sounds ill! When a cat loses weight despite eating, it could be caused by a medical illness such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or kidney disease. The pale gums could be a sign of anemia. However, with your description, it sounds as if he may be in kidney failure with the weight loss, poor hair coat and lethargy. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I recommend taking Tully Mars to a vet for blood work. He could be diabetic or have thyroid disease. Both of these illnesses can cause increases in appetite and weight loss. The blood work helps to rule in and rule out multiple diseases. Good luck and kisses to Tully Mars!

For example, some diseases that can result in chronic weight loss include inflammatory bowel disease (though usually vomiting and diarrhea are also observed), chronic kidney disease and even cancer, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Molly evaluated by your veterinarian as some of these conditions can be easily ruled out with basic bloodwork. That different behavior you describe could even represent neurologic symptoms. Sorry to hear that Molly has not been feeling well! Keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

Weight loss or lack of weight gain can be seen with gastrointestinal disease, renal or liver disease, among many others. I would recommend that you consider having him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. Poor guy. This sounds worrisome for sure. I would use some caution here and get Boba seen by your vet right away. He could have an underlying illness going on such as kidney disease that is causing his symptoms. The vet needs to do some bloodwork and a urinlaysis to start and try to find out what is causing him to be so ill. I’m glad to hear Grippet has lost the weight you wanted him to, but at his age we would want to ensure all the weight loss is for healthy reasons and not an underlying medical issue. As cats age, they frequently can get an overactive thyroid, diabetes, or kidney issues (among others) that can lead to unhealthy weight loss. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian and have bloodwork done to ensure all his weight loss is healthy and there isn’t an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. If he has a great appetite, hyperthyroid disease is forstbon my list. If his appetite is the same or decreased, kidney disease is first on my list. If he is obese, diabetes is certainly possible too. Finally, arthritis is also a cause of lethargy and matting of the fur (because it hurts to groom normally). Finally, cancer in any location can cause lethargy and weight loss. You're right, it doesn't sound good. Possible causes for the bloat and decreased appetite include pain from arthritis, hairballs, food allergy, GI blockage, intestinal parasites, IBD, intestinal lymphoma, systemic disease (liver, kidney, pancreas, diabetes), among others. The shedding and change in coat texture could be due to a decrease in nutrition from not eating, but is likely caused by not grooming as frequently. I recommend that James go to the vet as soon as possible. After a thorough physical exam, your vet may recommend additional diagnostics like x-rays or bloodwork to try to determine the cause of his symptoms.
