Why is my dog shaking, lifting a swollen leg, and so lethargic?

Last night my dog about 14 months old,started a slight shaking. This morning she is lifting one of her legs which looks slightly swollen and she seems very sleepy

Poor Pepper! The slight shaking can be a sign of pain, and if the leg looks swollen and she's lethargic, I would be concerned that she is in pain. The swollen leg can indicate an injury or an infection. I know it's Sunday in New Zealand, but there are vet clinics who are open for regular hours today here. I would take her into a vet today to have her leg examined and treated. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. If you absolutely cannot find an open vet clinic today, rest her. No running, jumping, or playing. Take her out to toilet on a lead only, and bring her right back in when she's done. Then take her into the vet first thing Monday. Find an ER vet if her leg becomes very swollen, she becomes very lethargic, and/or she stops eating. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Poor girl. This sounds very serious indeed. Black discoloration is a sign of possible necrosis (dying off of healthy tissue) and the swelling is likely cutting off circulation of proper blood flow to the leg. I would recommend taking her in to your vet immediately. Here is a website link with financial resources that may be able to assist you. http://m.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_veterinary_care.html If you can’t get her in right away, then try soaking the leg in a warm water bath of Epsom salt (can reduce some swelling and discomfort) and flushing any outward wounds with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water for a good antiseptic cleanse. Do not give over the counter human pain meds as these can cause acute kidney or liver failure in dogs. It’s best to only treat her with pain meds and additional treatment through your vet. Maddie's leg looks very swollen, and the fact that she is limping indicates that she is likely in a lot of pain. Please make an appointment to have Maddie seen by a veterinarian. Causes of the limping could be a muscular or nerve injury, a fractured bone, or a foreign body embedded in the leg. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for dogs, so I do not recommend giving any to Maddie without consulting with your vet. You can call and ask what the cost of the exam and consultation will be prior to going in to your vet, and plan accordingly.

I am very sorry to hear that Gab is having trouble with her leg and limping, I am sure it is worrying for you both. Unfortunately, there are many reasons why a dog may limp, ranging from injury, infection, osteoarthritis, disorders of the growing bones or joints, and even some cancers. She may be licking at the paw because it hurts, or there is something inside of it such as a migrating grass seed. Signs of infection in a paw would include redness, swelling, and discharge. Gab would also likely have a fever. Yes, I would take him to an emergency vet or if you can, find a regular vet clinic open on Saturdays which will be less expensive. It's up to you but I think it would not be nice to make him wait too long to see a vet. The swelling is worriesome. Even if he is not showing you outward pain he is pain or he would be putting the leg down. You would be surprised at the number of dogs I have seen with fractures that acted like it didn't hurt them. Since there has been issues with this leg in the past it is best to get it evaluated. At the very least you can get him some medications to make him feel better until you can see your vet.

Hi my dog has been licking her leg for two days and know it is swollen and she can't put pressure on it
Thank you for contacting Boop by Petco with your question about Pandora and for providing pictures of her paw. They are very helpful. I certainly see swelling in the pictures, especially of one of her toes. It may be infected or broken. If she can't put pressure on her leg, that means she is in a lot of pain. Unfortunately there are no OTC pain relievers you can give her. Many human ones are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I'd take her into a vet immediately. The vet will likely want to do x-rays of her paw to see what is going on, and can give her pain medication. I hope this helps!

Poor girl. She is likely in pain from the leg and that is why she was shaking. As long as she isn't screaming out in pain, having a seizure, or having severe lethargy, you should be able to wait until morning to get her seen by your regular vet. Until you can get her in, just let her rest in a cozy quiet area of the house and leash her whenerever she goes outside to keep her from causing further injury to the leg. The vet will likely do an x-ray of her leg or bloodwork if the issue seems to be neurologic in nature. I hope that Sasha's injuries get resolved soon! Best of luck and take care.

Fifi is in pain if she is walking with her right leg lifted. It could be she has torn a ligament leading to the pain and swelling. I would not be concerned about her ears being cold, as they can be colder than the rest of the body given how they are external and don't have theist blood supply. I'd take her into a vet today or tomorrow to get this problem with her leg checked out so it can be treated. Best of luck.

This could be due to knee pain or hip pain. Restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. If she doesn't improve or if she worsens in the next 48 hours, have her physically examined by your veterinarian. X-rays of the limb may be indicated after the exam. Do not medicate her without the advice of your veterinarian.

Do not give any medications to your dog without the advice of your veterinarian. Many OTC medications can be toxic to pets. Ideally, Ziggy should be examined by your veterinarian or a veterinary orthopedic specialist to diagnose ligament damage, arthritic conditions, fractures or tumors. X-rays of the knees and hips will likely be recommended. These can be done under anesthesia or sedation. A veterinary house all service may be an option for an exam. Afterwards, a sedative and/or pain management can be dispensed to make the trip to the clinic easier and less stressful for all parties.

Our 8 mo puppy hurt his leg while playing outside. He can walk on it but is favoring it and does seem to be swollen.
Ouch, poor Peyton! I would rest him tonight, and then have him seen by a vet in the morning. It could be that he strained a ligament or muscle, but it is concerning that the leg appears to be swollen and he is favoring it. Don't allow him to run, jump, or play tonight. Take Peyton out to toilet on a lead and bring him right back in when he's done. Then have him seen by a vet in the morning to diagnose what is causing the pain so he can be treated. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can prescribe him some safe pain medications as needed.
