My cat has explosive diarrhea and is making a mess. What should I do?

Poor Fred! This diarrhea could be caused by a GI illness, change in diet, intestinal worms, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. It sounds like he has a bad case of it, and I’d recommend a vet visit due to that. The vet can diagnose the cause of the diarrhea, and can treat him for it. I would take him into a vet today. That sounds like very bad diarrhea. This can be due to many causes including parasites, viral infections, bacterial infections, intussusception, organ dysfunction or intestinal obstruction. Since it’s so severe, I would recommend to get him to the veterinarian as soon as you can. Severe diarrhea no matter the cause can cause an intussusception, rectal prolapse or can just be very uncomfortable. With diarrhea this bad, it’s unlikely to be fixed without medication or treatment. Take a fresh sample of the stool with you. The doctor will need to look for parasites. It’s very important to know the parasite status as some parasites can be transmitted to humans. The doctor may recommend other diagnostics, medications and a diet change. I hope this helps and I hope he starts feeling better quickly. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Garfield seems to be suffering from a severe gastrointestinal condition, i do not recommend to stop feeding him, this can do more harm than good in cats, you need to take him to the vet as soon as you can in order to get treated, he will probably need an antibiotic course , a special prescription food and some meds to stop the diarrhea.

Hi and thanks for posting! Diarrhea or loose stool can have many causes- parasitic infection, viral, or bacterial infections are all possible. Dietary indiscretion, eating something out of the ordinary, changing new foods rapidly, or certain food sensitivities can be a cause. You can try putting a few teaspoons of plain canned pumpkin in his food to help firm up his stool or you can try feeding him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice to see if that helps. If not, I would recommend Sensi/Boba see his veterinarian. I would be sure to being a fecal sample with you in case his veterinarian wants to test his stool. I hope this helps!

Diarrhea is a signs referring to a intestinal problem. It could be due to dietary indiscretion, parasitic infestation, inflammatory disease (IBD inflammatory bowel disease), bacterial diseases or viral diseases. Even if less likely, neoplastic disease cannot be ruled out at this stage. You could provide some bland diet for the next 24-48 hrs (boiled breast chicken or white fish or gastrointestinal commercial diet) You could also add some prebiotics and probiotics to his diet, you can fined them at your local pet store. If he doesn't improve or you can spot blood in the faces or if he get lethargic and not eating, or if he start vomiting, I would suggest to have her checked by your veterinarian as soon as possible. It does indeed look like diarrhea. The fact that she peed on the carpet right in front of you means she is trying toell you that she is not feeling well, or she had to go really bad and could not wait until you were done cleaning the litter box. Diarrhea in cats is tricky. It could be caused by intestinal parasites, a gastro-intestinal infection, food indiscretion, stress, etc. I would take your kitty to a vet for an exam on Monday.

I noticed my cat has diarrhea this morning and 2 more times today. Active, eating frequently and drinking more water per day-about 3/4 cup. She weighs approx. 7.5 lbs. No blood, mucus nor vomiting. What would you recommend I do? Thanks
I would recommend you take your cat to the vet on Monday. They can do a fecal examination to rule out intestinal parasites and possibly an X-ray to rule out a blockage/foreign body. Your vet can also give you some medication to help stop the diarrhea. If the diarrhea becomes bloody and/or your cat starts vomiting as well then I would recommend getting him in to an ER vet to make sure nothing too serious is going on.

It could be that Ferdinand is suffering from intestinal worms. Those are very common in kittens, and if he is not up to date on his deworming treatments, I would pick one up for him. You will have to deworming him again in two weeks to make sure that all the worms are killed. If he is up to date on his deworming treatments, it could be he ate something rotten outside that upset his stomach when you weren't looking. In that case, I will give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 8-12 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

Pink diarrhea can be caused by eating foods with a lot of red dye, but you would usually see the stools be a rust color, not pink. I would be more concerned that there is blood in the stool causing the off color. Bloody diarrhea (and chronic vomiting and diarrhea) in a cat can be caused by food intolerance or allergies, intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral gastroenteritis (such as panleukopenia virus), GI blockage, inflammatory bowel disease, among others. I would recommend that you have another visit with the vet about the ongoing issues and the change in color of the diarrhea to see what is the next diagnostic step.
