My dog is vomiting and pooping blood. Is diet related to pancreatitis?

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor guy! Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and belly pain. It is a cause of vomiting and diarrhea but it isn't the only cause. Other causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, IBD, food allergy/intolerance or reaction to eating something outside or a new treat/food/people food. Since he has been low grade vomiting now for 2 days it is best to have him seen soon if it continues. It is encouraging that he is eating. I would be sure you fasted him for 12-24 hours then resume feeding with a very bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Make the meals very small. Only offer small amounts of water. If he is lethargic, won't eat and the vomiting continues even on a low grade scale he should be seen before the weekend. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

If Pixi is being treated for pancreatitis, this vomiting could still be related to it. Pancreatitis makes a dog very sick. I think she needs to see a vet immediately, as she sounds very sick. Please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

I am so sorry to hear this but glad you could get Manchitas the appropriate medical attention! A small amount of fresh blood could still normal at this point. The most important thing is how she seems to feel- returning energy, interest in food, water and moving around on her own are all good signs! As long as she is tolerating the medicine well, I would continue it. I would also closely watch her appetite and energy. Other causes for diarrhea and vomiting with blood in it include Addison's disease, intestinal parasites, tick-borne diseases, IMHA, IBD, intestinal cancer, among many others. I would recommend that Gubbu get checked out by a vet as soon as possible. After physical examination and a review of her medical history, the vet may recommend bloodwork to check for anemia and other relevant things. They may also recommend an abdominal ultrasound, which will help use get a picture of what her digestive tract is doing and looks like.

She could have parasites, or an internal medicine problem such as inflammatory bowel disease or chronic pancreatitis, among other possibilities. Your vet will likely check a fecal sample looking for microscopic parasite eggs, and run bloodwork to evaluate organ function and look for evidence of anemia from her chronic GI bleeding. Intermittent vomiting can be a very difficult symptom to diagnose as there may not be any obvious indicators as to the underlying cause. I recommend you contact your vets office for the ultrasound report and consider a full blod panel including b vitamin analysis as chronic bowel issues can often have low b12 levels and respond well to additional supplementation. I would convert her onto a bland, ultra low-fat diet whilst this is being investigated, my preferred option is royal canin gastro low fat (3-4 small meals each day) and also add a probiotic such as fortiflora. Ensure she is up to date with deworming treatments also. An endoscopy or camera study of the gullet and stomach may be required to check for inflammation or foreign bodies causing the bleeding

The vomiting and diarrhea could be due to eating the human food but other things like bacterial over growth, parasites (worms and giardia) or even something more severe like an intestinal blockage could be to blame. The blood indicates that his intestines are severely inflamed. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian today if at all possible. He can receive medications that can make him feel better and resolve the inflammation much faster (and hopefully stop any progression of the condition). Sometimes times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. Make sure your pup is drinking water. Break up the meals into smaller amounts than normal and fed more frequently. I hope your pup starts feeling better quickly! If she's eating leaves of certain plants, they may be toxic or causing ulcers in the GI tract which is leading to issues.
