My dog's neck is swollen after a dog fight. Should I take him to vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 6 years and 9 months old | 40 lbs

My dog got in a fight with another dog in the house last night when New Year'a Eve fireworks went off. I had to pry the other dog off of his neck. There was only a couple specks of blood but today his neck is swollen with what seems a bruise/blood under the skin. He's in good spirits, playing and eating. I put a warm compress on it tonight but before that it did not feel hot to the touch or seem to bother him. Is it something I can monitor or should I take him to the vet tomorrow?

Poor Tyago! I would recommend taking him to the vet tomorrow to be safe. Dog bite woundscan sometimes be more serious than they appear from the outside, so it would be best to have this checked. Your vet can make sure that there is no internal damage and may also prescribe antibiotics to help prevent infection or other complications from developing.
