Dog ear scratch: Why is she shaking her head? When will it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 4 lbs

Happy New Years to all the amazing people who helped me help my tiny one! This time our little troublemaker has hurt her right ear from scratching and it bled a bit,we took her to the vet and he cleaned her wound with an antiseptic. Mum is worried because she keeps shaking her head. Does that mean that the antiseptic is working or? And how long does it take to heal the wound? The scratches are hardly visible.

Hello again. If the wound itself has improved, but she is still shaking her head, then an inner ear infection (in the ear canal) may be present. Bella may need more than just the antiseptic clean, and in fact she may need an ear medication for you to use at home. Check inside her ears and see if any debris or foul odor. If there is, then a vet visit is needed for her to get medication to treat her ears. Also wounds on the skin typically heal within 3-7 days.
