My dog threw up after eating human food. Is it pancreatitis?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | unneutered

My dog just puked and I'm worried because a couple days ago he puked after eating his tick medication. This is common after taking his medication at night, which he did. As for today, he had some people food as a treat (French fries, fish). should I be concerned about his vomiting or is it just a coincidence and today's extra food didn't sit well with his stomach?

I would be concerned that the vomiting is due to the french fries and fish. French fries would be very fatty for a dog, and if the fish was fried as well, that would be very fatty for him. Dogs should never receive fatty foods, as it predispose them to pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be fatal, and you may have to rush him into the vet if he keeps vomiting. I will give you a home remedy to try first, however, but keep in mind that if it doesn't help, Sam will have to see a vet right away. In the future, I would never give him any fatty, fried foods again, and would recommend staying away from human food in general. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
