Dog broke nail, quick showing. How to treat and when to see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 8 months and 24 days old | 35 lbs

My dog just broke her nail and the Kwik is showing, I bathed her paw and managed to get part of the nail off that was hanging, I used antiseptic on it and put flour on it to help with the bleeding then wrapped it with gauze. Anything else I should do or worry about?

I would not put flour on the quick as that can be contaminated with bacteria. If she will let you soak the nail again in tepid water and remove the flour, dry the nail, put on some antiseptic ointment and wrap it again for two or three days. If the cause shows a discharge, or if River starts limping, or does not stop limping within two days, then you need to have it examined by a veterinarian. the wound should dry up and a new nail should grow in with in the next few months.

It sounds like you did a great job dealing with the problem - good for you! :) As long as the bleeding has stopped, a broken toenail normally should not require any other specific treatment right now. Just make sure that the gauze is not wrapped too tightly on the paw, as this can cause problems by cutting of circulation and causing swelling or even gangrene - to be safe, I would recommend removing it before bed tonight if possible. You can get River an e-collar (plastic cone) to prevent her from licking at the area if needed. You should monitor the area for the next few days for any redness or swelling, or excessive pain - if you see any problems, it would be best to take her to the vet as she may need an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory medication to help the area heal.
