In order to treat separation anxiety, we must identify the underlying causes of stress and desensitize him or her to the experience. The goal is to resolve the dog’s underlying anxiety by teaching him to enjoy, or at least tolerate, being left alone. In order to achieve success, you need to downplay things such as grabbing your keys and heading out the door. Many owners make the mistake of saying an elaborate goodbye to their pet before leaving which aggravates the unbridled emotion. It is essential to provide your pet with a safe haven or a place they can find comfort such as a dog bed and/or crate. Some dogs find the crate very comforting while others do no. If your pet has not been trained to a crate start out by placing them in the crate for short periods while supervised. Then try to encourage them to sleep in the crate even with the door open. Often it helps to place a bed in the crate but only if you don't think your pet will destroy it. In leu of the bed whil your gone, you might want to leave an attractive treat such as a peanut butter filled Kong in the crate to distract him and keep him busy. Regular exercise and an enriched environment can play a big role in alleviating street and anxiety in our pets. Try to walk your pet for 15 minutes prior to departure. Additionally, taking your pet to a training class would provide an opportunity for exercise, engagement, and discipline. In some cases, the use of a protective covering can aid in the treatment of anxiety. In veterinary medicine, the Thunder Shirt has become a popular item and confirmed by clients to work during storm induced anxiety. If the aforementioned techniques fail, there are veterinary behaviorists that can provide additional behavioral modification recommendations and medications such as Prozac or Xanax if needed.
