My dog's incision is leaking pink fluid after surgery. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | spayed | 7 years and 1 month old | 46.29 lbs

My staffy has been 4 days since surgery for a closed pyometra, She has been allowed home today but there seems to a be a lot of clear/pinkish watery fluid that does not smell coming from the wound. She does not seem to be in any pain and there is no redness or swelling and her temperature is normal. Is this anything to be really concerned about or is it a normal process?

Any type of discharge from the surgery site is considered abnormal. I would recommend taking Rich back to your vet to have this looked at. The wound may be opening slightly or a mild infection at the site may be present. Sometimes in the beginning stages of an infection it doesn't have a really strong odor to it.

I would not expect a lot of discharge from the wound 4 days after surgery, a small amount of discharge is fine, but a large amount might indicate an abnormal healing process. If she seems overall fine, I would just keep an eye on her and phone your vet tomorrow morning explaining the situation, she might need to be on antibiotics if she isn't already and possibly the wound needs to be checked to make sure there is nothing serious going on there.
