My dog has bloody diarrhea and blood shooting out. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 17 years and 11 months old | 15 lbs

Today I came home to 3 large piles of blood mixed with small chunks inside. I cleaned up the blood, and took my dog outside. When he went outside, a stream of blood shot out of his anus. He's looked a little under the weather for about a day, but nothing too bad. He might have been responsible for some vomit and diarrhea yesterday, but i thought it was my cat. I was going to take him to the vet today, but they had no available appointments. He's around 17 years old and a male pug Chihuahua mix.

Oh dear! Extremely bloody diarrhea like this is very concerning. This is often caused by an illness called HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis), but it could also be due to a bleeding disorder of some kind, a severe systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, or ingestion of something toxic. Regardless of the underlying cause, this is a medical emergency - dogs with these symptoms often become much sicker and die within hours without aggressive treatment including IV fluids, antibiotics, and medication to stop the diarrhea and/or vomiting. I would recommend taking your dog to the nearest emergency vet immediately.
