Is it safe to take my puppy camping if not fully vaccinated for parvo?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 27 years and 3 months old | 16 lbs

Our Aussie puppy is 15 weeks old and got her 3rd set of shots a week and a half ago (Dec 11th). Her next booster is scheduled for January 8th. We want to take her camping around Big Sur on Dec 26-30th, and are planning to let her on a blanket on the ground in the campsite, carry her when dogs might be around, & crate her in the tent with us at night. We are worried because she is not fully vaccinated she might pick up parvo from the environment. How concerned should we be given our plan?

I think that sounds like a very reasonable plan :) Although nothing is ever 100% foolproof, I would not consider a campsite like this to be a "high-risk" environment like a dog park, and most puppies are fairly well-protected by their vaccinations as long as they stay current on their booster shots.
