Dog food allergies: Will grain-free diet help skin issues and shedding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 1 year and 8 months old

If my dog has allergies, and now I've narrowed it down to food. If I switch her to a grain free diet, will I see a change in her skin? Like she has dark patches which I assume is from the dry food I recently put her on. If I switch to grain free, will these patches slowly fade away? Also is it best to get rid of the dry food I'm feeding her now and start the grain free straight away or mix them together? Also she seems to be shedding a lot more than usual.

Normally dogs that are allergic to food are never allergic to grain only, I would recommend that you change her food to an hypoallergenic diet rather than a grain free only. There are lots of brands to choose from, royal canine or Hill's , wet or dry, try a small bag of food to start with to make sure that she likes it, but make sure she is just fed that diet only no other treats or snacks for 7-8 weeks and you should see an improvement in her skin if allergies are related to food. I would definitely recommend a try but it' s important that you keep up the commitment for this period of time and that she isn' fed anything else.
