My 6-month puppy has diarrhea and gas at night. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 6 month old puppy has diarrhea on and off for the past month. (his stool is most of the time firm during day but at night its really loose or diarrhea). He had tapeworms last week, i got him treated for then a day after I gave him comfortis he had mucus in his stool. Since then he has not had mucus in the stool but he has still had diarrea at night. He also has been pretty gassy on and off (sometimes stinky). I have been feeding him the same food since he was 2 months old. what could it be?

It's possible that your puppy has some other type of parasite that a regular dewormer won't treat, such as coccidia or giardia. He may also have a food allergy or intolerance to something in his diet - this can develop over time, so it can be the problem even if nothing has changed recently in what you are feeding. Or, he may have some type of nutrient absorption problem such as EPI (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency). I would recommend taking your puppy to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to. He/she can do a fecal exam as well as blood work or other testing if needed to help determine the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.
