My dog has bloody eye mucus. Is it serious and what should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 11 months old | 80 lbs

My dog has a strange mucus-like substance on the middle of her eye that looks bloody. It does not seem to have the same characteristics of a cherry eye like I've seen before. How do I treat it?

This sounds like an ulcer which requires veterinary attention as they can be very painful and also threaten vision if allowed to get too deep. Early treatment relieves pain and also minimises scarring and damage to the eye. In the meantime, keep the eye flushed with sterile saline eye wash to reduce the risk of infection, do not apply drops until assessed by a vet as some drops can make the condition worse

Patches could have an eye infection, or may have sustained trauma to her eye causing the bloody mucus. I would recommend taking her into a vet right away. Any eye condition should be considered an emergency, as leaving it untreated can lead to visualness. The vet can diagnose what is causing the bloody mucus, and can treat it.
