My dog's eyes are irritated and squinting after grooming. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Male | neutered | 13 years and 11 months old | 10 lbs

I picked up my Maltese from the groomer and he's squinting , keeping eyes closed . They are watering . He's done this before when I've picked him up , thought it may be soap that irritated him or an allergy to the shampoo . I'm not real sure . It normally resolves on its own . Is there anything I can do to help him ?

He could have irritation, scratch/ulcer, or an infection. You could put some artificial tears in his eyes and see if that helps. Otherwise, have your vet take a look at him for treatment. He may need an antibiotic and/ or corticosteroid to help.
