My dog ate Extra gum. Is it life-threatening? What should I do?

Hi, My 14 year old Boston Terrier just got into a trash can and ate 2 pieces of gum from the brand "Extra". Could this be life threatening?

Yes this could be life threatening if the Extra was sugar free and contains xylitol. Xylitol is highly toxic to dogs and is fatal without treatment. Because I'm not sure if the Extra Oliver ate contain xylitol, and if you aren't sure either, the best thing to do is rush him into the vet immediately. The vet can treat him for xylitol toxicity if the gum contained it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Check the ingredients. Xylitol is found in some sugar free gums and it is highly toxic to dogs. If Xylitol is present, have her examined quickly to start treatment asap. If Xylitol is not present, the gum should not cause a problem. I hope this helps.

Many types of Trident gum contain xylitol. This artificial sweetener is extremely toxic to dogs because it very quickly causes hypoglycemia (low blood glucose) and liver damage. At this point, you should take Gidget to an emergency veterinarian immediately. They may or may not induce vomiting since it's been over an hour since she ingested the gum. They will also be able to closely monitor her blood glucose and liver values, while administering supportive IV fluids and medications. There are no home remedies for this situation - this is a life-threatening emergency if the gum contained xylitol. I really hope that everything goes well for Gidget!

What to do if dog swallow chewing gum ? Is it serious or life threatening ?
The artificial sugars in some gum can certainly be toxic--we need to know how much gum, and which brand. If you have any major concern and he ate the gum within the last couple of hours, take him to an emergency vet for them to induce vomiting and then you likely won't have to worry about potential toxicity. Poor Maui!! I would recommend that you find out exactly what type of gum it was, and then call your vet clinic or the pet poison hotline. Gum often contains 'fake' sugars which can be harmful to dogs and the symptoms can range from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) to significant liver damage. Your vet or the pet poison hotline can help you determine if any treatment is needed. Sometimes these ingestions require hospitalization, IV fluids and medications, and bloodwork both during the hospital stay and afterwards to ensure the liver is continuing to function properly. And remember, just because your dog seems to be acting find doesn't mean they aren't getting sick on the inside. With gum ingestion we sometimes don't know about it until it's too late, so please find out more information.

I would be suspicious of gum causing this. Gum can contain an artificial sweetener known as xylitol that can artificially lower the blood sugar in dogs and cause liver damage. In these cases, it's recommended to give the dog an IV glucose solution and monitoring for 24 hours. Unfortunately, this requires a visit to the vet. Without knowing more, I am just guessing that this is gum. It seems like some sort of poisoning is possible though, so I think either way the best thing to do is take Goose to a vet as soon as possible, or he could have life-threatening complications. Oh no, that wasn't good that Kujo ate gum! Thank you for providing the ingredients information for the gum, that was extremely helpful. The good news is that maltitol and sorbital are not toxic to dogs. Because it does not contain xylitol, she should be fine. You may see some stomach upset from eating the gum in the form of vomiting and diarrhea, and I will give you a home remedy to give to her if you see this. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. I hope this helps :-)

You need to take Gia into a vet immediately. This gummy contains xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs. She needs veterinary care now, this is not something that can be treated at home. This quantity is unlikely to give any problem other than mild gastrointestinal upset. Toxic effects seen with ingestion of 0.15 g/kg consist of hypoglycemia and hepatic failure. Based on this calculation your dog should have ingested 1,95grs; even though chewing gum pieces have surprisingly variable amounts of xylitol depending on their flavor the maximum amount I have found is 0.3grs per gum. Having said that, in Harley's case we are definitively far away from toxic dosages. I would recommend to monitor him for the next 4-6hours and, should any sign occur, like vomiting and diarrhoea, a check up would be required.
