My dog has bloody stool and won't eat after antibiotics. What to do?

Poor guy. The next step would be to put him on a long term antibiotic, such as Tylosin powder and get him scheduled for an abdominal ultrasound to look at his intestines. The ultrasound can reveal more information about his GI tract and hopefully give us an answer as to why he is having chronic bloody stool. Hopefully it is just an inflammatory condition (inflammatory bowel disease) and not something like an intestinal tumor that is causing this. When two antibiotic are used there can be a reduction in some of the food bacteria in the gut. I would recommend giving Ralph daily probiotics such as over the counter Culturelle to help her the bacterial flora back balanced. If he is still having blood after 24-48 hrs then it's best to have him seen by your vet for further care. Best wishes and take care.

Antibiotics can cause GI upset such as diarrhea, but I would be concerned about the blood as that isn’t a typical side effect of them. When dogs have diarrhea, their bowels become irritated and you can see some blood. I’d watch him for now, and if the bloody stools continue, then I would take him into the vet. I hope this helps!

I am So sorry to hear that Russel has been so unwell. I am happy to hear his respiratory issues are resolved. It is possible that the same infection has affected his gastrointestnal tract, that the antibiotics themselves have upset his natural gut flora, or even that it’s all coincidence and Russel simply ate something he should have. From what you are describing, a liquid bowel movement which has fresh blood in it, it sounds as though Russell has colitis, or inflammation of the last portion of the large intestines. There are several causes of colitis in dogs, ranging from bacterial infections, parasite infestations, IBD, stress, or ingestion of contaminated food. Since you have only noticed these issues for a day I would continue to monitor Russell at home. Provide a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast and white rice and plenty of fresh water. You can also add cooked mashed skinless sweet potatoes to help with the diarrhoea, a dog formulated probiotic, and low sodium

Hello, sorry to hear about Lily. Amoebiasis can cause bloody stools on its own, additionally, antibiotic administration may cause diarrhea as well. It could be that she will continue to have mild GI sings for a few more days while she is treated for her disease. If you note that the blood in the stools is getting worse I would recommend having her re-evaluated. Otherwise, if the blood in stool is improving then you don't have to bring her back to your veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Riley’s stool looks a bit soft. This may be be from being on doxycycline as antibiotic associated diarrhea is fairly common. Your vet may be able to dispense a probiotic such as FortiFlora or Proviable that can help return the stool to normal. The blood may be due to stress colitis. Typically, metronidazole (flagyl) is an anti-inflammatory antibiotic for the gut that recommended for blood tinged soft stool, however as she just finished a course of antibiotics, putting her on probiotics and a plain boiled rice and chicken diet (unless she has an allergy to chicken) or a prescription Hills intestinal diet or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal diet for 3-5 days may be enough to allow the irritated intestinal mucosa to heal. Anesthesia can cause these symptoms along with the stress of the stay but that antibiotic can be a factor also. If he is eating and drinking fine with only a small amount of blood at the end of the BM then you can monitor for anything further. If it is diarrhea with blood through out then I would get him seen. You can always try boiled chicken and rice as this is bland and easy to digest. You may need to add canine probiotics while in antibiotics. You may want to talk to your vet about a different one that is easier on the stomach

I'm sorry to hear your dog is sick! The black and bloody is very concerning to me. Black stool can indicated a gastrointestinal ulcer. Dogs with kidney problems or exposure to toxin can also have black or bloody stool and this can be an emergency. I recommend you take your dog to a veterinarian right away. I am sorry Bruno is not feeling well. I am having some trouble understanding what you are talking about and how to help. A young dog with blood in stool would concern me about a virus, parasite or liver issues. However epilepsy (seizures of unknown reason) should not be causing bloody stool. IF Bruno is on seizure medications it can affect the liver values. I would try to re post or do a consult for more information

If the bloody stool is reoccurring and due to his age I would do blood work, be sure a rectal exam was done, fecal testing, and his anal glands were checked. I would consider a prescription GI diet for several weeks and a probiotic. He may have underlying intestinal disease like inflammatory bowel disease, low B12, pancreatic disease or simple isn't digesting his food the same way. I wish you the best!
