Is it dangerous if my husky in heat gets pregnant by a large dog?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 29 days old | 45 lbs

My dog is a husky about 8 months old, she is in her first heat, sadly we live with a black mouth cur male, unfixed ,about a year old, he keeps trying to breed with her and i'm worried if he succeeds that the pregnancy or labor will kill her, Are my worries justified or will she be just fine? (Note i am trying my best to keep them apart, shes about 45 lbs where is he is around 80)

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is definitely good idea to keep the dogs apart to avoid an unwanted pregnancy. You can also elect to have your male dog neutered within the next several days to eliminate the risk of pregnancy. If Iris becomes pregnant, she is unlikely to have issues giving birth, as most Huskies have pelvic canals which are proportional to their body size, and it is not certain that the puppies will be the exact size of the father (it is more likely that they will be somewhere in the middle). Your vet can also use x-rays and ultrasound to monitor the size of the puppies as Iris comes closer to term and recommend a c-section if necessary. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you have!
