Why is my dog hacking like a cat and struggling to breathe?

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Sissy! How old is Sissy? My biggest concern is your comment about labored breathing. When owners comment that the breathing is abnormal then I have to recommend an immediate veterinary exam. Possible causes of coughing and labored breathing are: Kennel cough (especially if she is around other dogs a lot), pneumonia, congestive heart failure, collapsing trachea, laryngeal paralysis, cancer. Once your Vet examines her and gets a good history they may want to take X-rays of her chest. Hopefully she just has kennel cough and needs some antibiotics and cough tabs. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! It sounds like Jack is having a rough go of things lately. There are a plethora of causes for cough and vomiting/regurgitation which is what it sounds like he has. Chest x-rays are the first diagnostic needed to assess the lungs for disease, so I would recommend having some taken. If they were taken initially, retaking them would be a good idea. With the vomiting, abdominal x-rays could be helpful as well. This is a case where a consultation would be helpful as I could ask more pointed questions and perhaps guide you with a better list of likely causes to the issue. The weight doesn't help, but that kind of coughing makes me worry about her developing congestive heart failure. Respiratory infection and pneumonia, among other things can cause coughing as well. I strongly suggest getting her in to see your vet as soon as possible. If she is having congestion due to a heart problem medication can make her much more comfortable. Your vet will do an exam, labwork and likely x-rays. Based on these results your vet will be better able to tell you what is going on and how best to treat it.

Signs of heart disease are coughing, exercise intolerance, difficulty breathing, fainting, swollen belly, etc. Not much can be done for heart disease from home aside from reducing stress and excessive exercise. Depending on the cause, heart disease is often managed with medication but is not cured. Your veterinarian will want to listen to her heart and potentially perform an EKG if they suspect heart disease. If you suspect that your other dog has heart disease, you should also have him/her examined by a veterinarian.

The description of heavy breathing, retching, and contracting abdomen sound like the symptoms of a gastric dilatation/volvulus, or bloat. This happens when the stomach is filled with air and can even twist on itself and is more common in large breed dogs. The condition is extremely uncomfortable, and requires immediate stabilization and possibly surgery. This can be life-threatening and requires immediate veterinary care, especially if there is torsion. I recommend getting your dog to the vet as soon as possible. There are 24-hour emergency clinics in most cities that are open overnight and will be able to stabilize your dog.

Many of these problems are extremely serious, so I would recommend taking Missy to your nearest emergency clinic immediately. Anytime an animal is not breathing normally it is an emergency. Sometimes the breathing can look abnormal when they are in pain or have a fever but there are more serious causes for trouble breathing that are life threatening: heart failure, pneumonia, pleural effusion, cancer. The abnormal breathing alone is a reason to take her to an emergency room now. If you mean she is straining to urinate and is NOT passing urine, that is also a life threatening problem and see should be taken to an open emergency room. Causes of being unable or urinate are most commonly from a bladder stone stuck in the urethra or a bladder tumor. When dogs strain to pee they can vomit and pant due to pain If she is straining to poop, then that likely means she has diarrhea and feels the urge to go but doesn't have any stool to
