My dog has bloody diarrhea for days, meds not helping. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | spayed | 2 years and 7 months old

My dog has had diarrhea for about 2-3 days and today she had blood in it for the first time. I’ve been giving her Dawin tablets 3 times a day but it doesn’t seem to be helping. What can I do to help her? The vet gave me the tablets and metronidazole but it seems to be getting worse not better.

If there is blood in the diarrhea today then she should go back to the veterinarian as soon as possible. Sometimes it can become a serious condition called hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, which can be very dangerous. Hydration is very important in these cases. I also usually recommend probiotic therapy in these cases. Pro viable is my favorite brand, but prostora and fortiflora are helpful too. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.
