My dog had pancreatitis. Why won't he eat after playing with dogs?

Poor guy. An obstruction is something to consider; however uncommon in older dogs. I would be inclined to look at all the lab findings in detail to give you more specific recommendations on what is likely your next best step for Barrington. If he does have pancreatitis then he may need to be hosptilalized with I.V. fluids, antinausea medicaitons antibiotics and pain meds given as an injection to help get him back to healthy status. Pancreatitis is quite a serious inflammation of the pancreas, and your dog's body will be tired from the disease. He does need time to rest and heal up from it, so some lethargy can be expected. If you are concerned that he is very lethargic, however, then that isn't to be expected and I would call your vet to see if they want you to bring him back in for a health check.

If his appetite is still not great ask your vet for antacids and antinausea medications. Pancreatitis can also be painful. Besides supportive care Chester likely just needs time. Hello, I would expect Walter to still be a bit lethargic and weak at this point. The fact that he is eating, not vomiting, then passing firmer stool is wonderful! This makes me believe he is on the right track for recovery. We worry about blockages when they are not eating, vomiting, and have diarrhea. Pancreatitis is a serious disease and a dog can die from it. So you need to give her time to recuperate. It will take more than two days for her to become healthy. Make sure she is hydrated and feed her only small amounts of the gastrointestinal food, but offer it often. Eventually she will start eating better. If she still is wobbly and not improved by Monday you should take her back to the vet for a recheck.

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor little Biscuit. I am going to talk from a professional and personal standpoint. My dog has chronic pancreatitis so I have been exactly where you are at. The main thing about pancreatitis is to get patients to eat as soon as possible which of course can be quite challenging of course as they do not feel well. The main reason why is that pancreatitis can cause pain and mainly nausea so it is crucial to get patients on anti-nausea medications as well as medications for pain control. I recommend that you check which medications he is on to see if there is something that can be added. I highly recommend a medication called ondansetron for nausea, Entyce for appetite stimulation and Tramadol for pain control. I think ondansetron makes a huge difference as does Entyce so I think that would be great for Biscuit. Best of luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for him.

However, if Beaux continues to to vomit and being weak and lethargic, you should take him back to your local vets as he may need more aggressive treatment with intravenous fluids, intravenous painkillers and anti-sickness medications.

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Roxy! It is possible she is having a flare up of pancreatitis, but she is 9 years old so we need to be mindful of other things as well. She could be painful in her neck or back or have a different metabolic condition (liver, kidney problem or diabetes). I think starting the omerprazole as prescribed by your Vet is fine. For my patients with pancreatitis I do a low fat diet for life. If she is not eating and still acting abnormal when your Vet opens I would have her seen. Pancreatitis makes them nauseous and is painful. I treat with pain medications, antibiotics and antinausea medications. The omeprazole is just an antacid and will not help much for the nausea and pain. I hope this helps and I wish Roxy a speedy recovery!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor guy! Pancreatitis can cause vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia and belly pain. It is a cause of vomiting and diarrhea but it isn't the only cause. Other causes are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, IBD, food allergy/intolerance or reaction to eating something outside or a new treat/food/people food. Since he has been low grade vomiting now for 2 days it is best to have him seen soon if it continues. It is encouraging that he is eating. I would be sure you fasted him for 12-24 hours then resume feeding with a very bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Make the meals very small. Only offer small amounts of water. If he is lethargic, won't eat and the vomiting continues even on a low grade scale he should be seen before the weekend. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

With pancreatitis, it is typically caused by them eating something that they were not supposed too. Usually from human food. I agree that changing Shadow's diet to a bland diet and keeping him on antibiotics (not long term) will be beneficial for him. Pancreatitis can be serious and is usually painful. Most dogs do very well on exactly what your vet is doing while more severe cases require intensive treatment and hospitalization.
