Hello, I am dog sitting and the dog we are watching has severe eye discharge build up under his eyes. When I tried to clean his eyes the skin underneath is broken and it bleeds. How should I clean his face?

So the first question is why is there discharge. A dog as large as Samson should not have eye discharge normally and needs to see a vet as I am very worried about an eye ulcer. If the dog in question is a small/toy breed then clear discharge with large crusty buildup is common. Either way, the mantra is SOAK SOAK SOAK. Use plenty of warm water or saline until the stuff is thin enough to gently wipe off. Avoid any scrubbing or picking motions. Sometimes, these guys do also need a topical medication if the infection underneath is severe. Hope this helps and best of luck!
