My dog ate chocolate and is pacing and panting. Is she poisoned?

Fast respiration can be a symptoms of chocolate intoxication but it could also be a sign of nausea, abdominal pain, general discomfort. If Teal continues to pant or develops other symptoms of chocolate intoxication, like racing heart, generalized tremors, restlessness, nervousness you should take her to your local vets as an emergency.

It's difficult to know how much the actual cocoa content is in this, but my estimate is that it would be at-most enough to cause a moderate to severe reaction. Rosie is already showing signs of a mild reaction, which is hyperactivity. Further signs of toxicity can be vomiting, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take Rosie to a vet for treatment/monitoring, because chocolate toxicity can be deadly. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure she has plenty of water and that you check her every two hours for any further signs of toxicity. Being hyper and having excessive thirst are both signs of chocolate toxicity, and given that Rainey was showing these signs, it's best that she sees a vet immediately. It can take up to 24 hours for additional signs of chocolate toxicity to occur, and she does need treatment for it now. I can't say for sure if she will be ok because I can't see her in person, and having her evaluated and treated by a vet is the best way to know if she will be ok. A 40 pound husky would need to ingest quite a bit more chocolate to cause signs of toxicity, and you would see signs of toxicity no more than 12 hours after ingestion. I’d be worried that Suka’s panting and elevated heart rate could be unrelated. Panting can be a sign of pain or anxiety and if it continues you may want to see your veterinarian.

Chocolate can cause gastrointestinal upset like vomiting and diarrhea, but when larger amounts are ingested it can affect the heart, blood pressure and cause muscle tremors or even seizures. It might be a good idea to have her examined by your veterinarian so they can check her heart rate. If her heart rate is normal and it's been over 12 hours since the chocolate was ingested you're unlikely to see any other symptoms of toxicity, and there are no long lasting effects.

A single bite of a chocolate brownie bar should not contain enough actual cocoa to cause any significant problems, so I doubt you'll see any problems at all. :) You may see some mild GI upset (vomiting or diarrhea), especially if your pup isn't used to human food, but otherwise no major issues would be expected. With more serious chocolate toxicity cases (which normally require a lot more chocolate to be ingested), we can see symptoms like restlessness and panting, an unusually fast heart rate, and even seizures or other neurologic issues. So you can certainly watch for any issues, but again, I wouldn't expect to see this from the scenario you're describing here. But if you have any concerns, it's never wrong to take your dog to an emergency clinic to be checked out and make sure everything is okay.

Dark chocolate is more dangerous than regular chocolate but what is really important is how big your dog weighs. This amount of dark chocolate in a small dog (20# or less) could be very serious. In a much larger dog it is probably not as big of an issue. Your dog may experience a rapid heart beat, hyperactivity, vomiting/diarrhea, and worse case scenario would involve seizures and possibly death. My best advice is to let your parents know what is going on as soon as possible so that if your dog needs medical attention she can get it sooner rather than later. I hope this helps. GI upset is a common symptom of chocolate ingestion and toxicity. In order to know if the dose of chocolate she received is toxic the type of choclate needs to be known (milk, dark, etc.). Some types contain more of the concerning toxin then others. Symptoms typically start 6 to 12 hours after ingestion so this timing is a bit delayed so the vomiting may also be unrelated. But, given the history, your pet should be seen by a veterinarian today to calculate the chocolate dose, investigate the vomiting, and get her feeling better. Chocolates toxicity is very serious. Vomiting and diarrhea are the first signs of toxicity but can quickly become heart issues, seizures, and even death depending on how much she consumed. Assuming he ate all 12 oz of the semi sweet chocolate, at his weight of 85 pounds, this should result in a mild reaction. You are seeing signs of it, including the vomiting, panting, and restlessness. Given that he is much more calm now, I would continue to monitor him. It can take up to 24 hours for the full effects of chocolate toxicity to occur, and if he continues vomiting, acts distressed, pants, and/or is restless again, then yes I would take him into a vet to be safe. To help with the vomiting, I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. Hopefully, however, the worse has passed for him and he will be fine. Best of luck!
