My dog ate chocolate and is pacing and panting. Is she poisoned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Female | unspayed | 86 lbs

My 86lb dog ate some of my valentines box of assorted chocolates last night while I was gone. She was up pacing, panting and anxious wanting to be up on the bed all night (which she normally sleeps next to the bed.) she seemed to be breathing a little hard and has calmed down a little now. Should I be worried about poisoning?

The signs you are describing do sounds like a toxicity. Chocolate toxicity depends on the size of the dog, amount of chocolate consumed, and the type of chocolate, with dark chocolate being more toxic. I recommend keeping a close eye on Peyton if she is calming down, but she should be seen by a vet if you are concerned that she is not acting like herself or if she develops tremors, seizures, or vomiting. I hope all is well!
