My dog has red streaks in poop, vomiting after travel. What's wrong?

Hello. A little blood in the stool is often nothing to be overly concerned about as it is probably only parasites or inflammation, possibly from colitis. But with vomiting, we now have to be concerned that Winston has something a bit more serious, like a more severe intestinal infection, an intestinal foreign body/blockage, inflammatory bowel disease or even cancer. If he is keeping most of his food & water down, & the blood in his stool in minimal & overall he seems pretty comfortable, then it is OK to wait to have him seen on Sunday. The red steak in the picture may be blood; or I could also be convinced that it is some light red material in the poo. If your dog tends to rip up things like clothes or other non-food items, then I would inspect the poo a little closer. If it is blood, then no need to worry too much at this time. This indicates that Paxi has bleeding in her colon, rectum, or anus. This can happen due to certain infections, or trauma (this can happen if Paxi is scooting) to the anus. However, this bleeding is often transient (often goes away in a day or two) and does not need treatment right away. If she also had diarrhea, then I would be more concerned. If the stools remain a normal shape like this, and Paxi is otherwise behaving normal, then I think it's OK to wait a day or two and see if the red streaks stop. If you continue to see this for more than 24 hours, then I recommend taking Paxi and a poo sample to the vet for examination. I hope that helps and all is well with Paxi.

He could have a number of things causing this including parvovirus (if he isn't fully vaccinated), a foreign body obstruction, or just a severe case of colitis associated with the new food that you introduced. Poor guy. I would recommend taking him in today if possible and getting this treated quickly. Best case scenario is that he has a severe case of colitis and a short course of antibiotics and probiotics, along with a bland diet is enough to get him well again. As a first approach, as you are already doing, I would suggest to continue feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48 hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. A probiotic can be added to the diet as well like pro-kolin for example. I would definitely recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist in the next 48 hours or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Based on the picture, it looks as though Hamilton has a bit of dark red blood in his stool. The fact that the blood is red tells me that it's coming from the colon since blood from the stomach or small intestines is black from being at least partially digested. Bordetella vaccines won't cause any bloody stools, but stress or anxiety (possibly from his vet visit?) can cause a bit of stress colitis. Likewise, blood in the stool can occur with intestinal parasites, viruses, or some blood clotting conditions. Since Hamilton otherwise seems completely normal, I would start by asking your vet to send a stool sample to the lab to check for intestinal parasites, including various microscopic worm eggs, Giardia, and coccidia. In the meantime, also keep a close eye on his stool to see if this is an ongoing issue. If this was a one time occurrence, I wouldn't be concerned at all. However, if this is an ongoing issue, it's worth taking him back to the vet for further investigation and testing. I h

It is possible, however other issues such as blocked/infected anal glands, parasites, GI irritation, or underlying illness may also cause bloody stool. If it is to the point where you have to wipe Winston and he has blood present with every defecation, it would be best to bring him and a sample of his stool into your vet for further testing.

Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, food allergy or intolerance, pancreatitis, reaction to new food/treat/table food, medications or vaccinations. The blood indicates inflammation. Ideally he should see your Vet for medications. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 1-2 normal stools. It could be a food allergy so if it persists then I recommend trying a different food. I hope this helps!

Blood in the stool and diarrhea could be caused by parasites, change in diet, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Please make an appointment to have Alfie seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible, as diarrhea and blood in the stool can lead to dehydration and anemia, and can be very dangerous if left untreated. Hi. I'd he is acting completely normal, wait for next bowel movement. Collect a sample to take to the veterinarian as well. If there is any vomiting that starts, get him in right away. Good luck. Great question
