My dog's skin lesion isn't improving. Is it a hot spot or infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My dog Shiba a 9 year old female husky keeps scratching her skin and now she has a lesion on the side of her waist. Took her to vet he gave her antibiotic augmenting and shaved around it. When she didn’t improve he gave her ceflexin and I’m cleaning her with iodine. Will a biopsy help us to know if it’s bacterial or fungal infection? Is natural apple cider good to clean her infected skin? Thx

This seems to be an hot spot (superficial exudative dermatitis) and very likely it is caused by a bacterial infection. Cephalexin is a good antibiotic and usually resolve the problem quickly. local antibiotic ointment can be used as well. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking.
