What reactions can my cat have to the panleukopenia vaccine?

Hello and thank you for your post! After a vaccine, we can typically expect the animal to be a little sleepy and potentially sore in the area where the vaccine was administered. In regards to vaccine reactions, you might see a variety of symptoms. Swollen face, hives, itching, breathing problems, vomiting, lethargy, etc. can all be seen with severe reactions. If you are seeing any of these symptoms you should get Daisy in to your veterinarian to be seen and treated immediately as the reaction can escalate quickly. Hope this helps! Animals vaccinated with a live vaccine can develop mild symptoms and shedding for a short while in the minority of cases, but inactive vaccines would not have this effect. There are many possible causes of viral and bacterial diarrhea and i would recommend testing stools parvo in affected cases if you are concerned

Hi and thanks for your post. Common side effects of vaccines are vomiting, diarrhea, swelling of the face and paws, hives, and extreme lethargy. Most vaccines reactions happen within the first 2 hours after administration, but can be up to 24-48 hours after the vaccine. You should be concerned if you notice any of the above 24-48 hours after the vaccine is given and please visit your nearest veterinary emergency clinic for any of these symptoms. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Vaccine reactions are rare and we usually see facial swelling and hives more often in dogs but I do think that Peanut may be having a vaccine reaction. You should take her to a emergency Vet. The mainstay of treatment for a vaccine reaction is outpatient. They give injections of steroids and possibly an antihistamine. Peanut will likely be sent home with steroids as well. I do not recommend giving her any human medications. Cats are very sensitive to medications. I hope this helps and good luck!

Vaccine reactions can vary widely, similar to humans. Mild symptoms include injection site tenderness, and transient lethargy (24 hours or so). Contact you veterinarian if lethargy persists, he stops eating, vomits, or has diarrhea. Emergency intervention would be respiratory distress, swollen face or a severe change in temperament due to fever/ more severe illness than listed above. These types of reactions are very rare. For my patients that show even mild vaccine reactions, I will reduce their vaccines to 1 booster per visit, and often will pre-medicate with Benadryl. I also prioritize my vaccines based on age of the animal, vaccine history and prevalence of disease in our region.

The most common side effects are a mild fever, mild lethargy and discomfort at the injection site. These are the result of the vaccine stimulating the immune system and typically resolve with a day or two. More severe vaccine reactions can be analphylactic reactions and typically occur very quickly after a vaccine is given (within minutes) and may include hives, facial swelling and trouble breathing. Toby is likely already outside this time frame, so you likely do not need to worry about an anaphylactic reaction. The bordetella intranasal vaccine is not one that we regularly see reactions to, so it would be pretty surprising to have a vaccine reaction, although I suppose not impossible. Signs of a vaccine reaction include major facial swelling, vomiting, and extreme lethargy. If you saw any of these issues after his vaccine, or any vaccine, I would recommend giving an appropriate dose of Benadryl (the dose depends on his body weight and your veterinarian can tell you how much you should give) and taking him to a veterinary emergency clinic. However, with the intranasal bordetella vaccine you are more likely to just see a little bit of sneezing in the day or two after the vaccine.
