My dog is limping, coughing, and acting unlike himself. What's next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 9 months old | 85 lbs

My dog is acting funny limping around like leg hurts but hasn’t done anything to hurt it . Got a coughing and won’t even try to get on the bed like he can’t. He is laying around acting as if he doesn’t feel good. Acting a lot different than normal.

Poor Razor sounds like he has a couple of things going on at the moment. It could be he strained or torn a ligament causing him to limp, and he's definitely in pain if he's limping. The cough could be caused by a respiratory infection or cardiac disease. I would rest him tonight. No running, jumping, or playing. Do not let him on the bed, having him sleep on the floor. Take him out to toilet on a leash and bring him right back in when he's done. I would then take him into the vet in the morning for a physical exam, lameness exam, and possibly x-rays. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms and how best to treat them. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Good luck, I hope this helps!
